Toy Room Transformation
I am so excited to finally share the details of our toy room transformation. With our kids now being teenagers, the space just wasn’t serving its original purpose anymore. Let’s be honest, most teenagers just want a place to hang out with their friends and watch TV. So I decided it was time to transform the room into a moody, sophisticated, dark and cozy hangout space. It turned out better than I could have imagined and I can’t wait to share all the details with you.
Before and After!
Paint Colour
Because I wanted the space to feel moody, I knew choosing the right paint colour had to be my first step. I decided that colour drenching the entire room would really set the tone. I’ve been using Benjamin Moore paint for as long as I can remember, so I grabbed my paint decks and started flipping through their endless options. While I had a few strong contenders, one night I opened my email to see that Benjamin Moore had just released their Colour of the Year for 2026: Silhouette. It was exactly what I had been looking for, it felt like it was meant to be!
Furniture
The existing couch was incredibly comfortable and fit the space perfectly, so I decided to keep it. I knew that with the overall transformation and some updated pillows and throws that it would feel like a brand-new piece.
For the remaining furniture, I knew exactly where to go. Article has so many beautiful, timeless pieces that feel both functional and sophisticated. For the coffee table, I chose the Neah Smoked Oak Nesting Coffee Table. I love that it can be styled to suit the space while adding a soft and organic feel.
Because the ceiling is vaulted, I needed a media unit to house the TV. I went with the Lief Smoked Oak Media Unit which has clean, simple lines and ties in beautifully with the wood tone of the coffee table.
Although this space is primarily a flex TV room, I also wanted it to double as a guest room when needed. For that reason, I added the Marina Sleeper Chair in a gorgeous fir green velvet. It works perfectly as a cozy oversized chair for lounging and easily transforms into a super comfortable single bed.
Lastly, I added the Samsung Frame TV which is hands down my favourite TV. You can display beautiful artwork or scenery so when you’re just hanging out or reading a book it blends seamlessly into the decor and doesn’t feel like a big black screen dominating the room.
Decor & Extras
If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that a rug is a must-have in any space, yes even on top of carpet! It adds warmth and comfort, anchors the furniture, and ties the decor together. I chose the Olivia Rug from Tumble because their rugs are incredibly durable and washable. Knowing there would be teenagers and dogs in and out of the space I wanted something I knew would truly last.
Lighting plays such a huge role in setting the mood, so I made sure to incorporate multiple light sources; lamps (the console lamp is from Jysk) , candles and layered lighting (the sconces were a Homesense find that I had in storage for years) to create different atmospheres depending on the time of day or activity.
For decor, I wanted everything to feel organic and collected. I incorporated vintage artwork, stacked books and plenty of plants. Plants are always my favourite finishing touch as they bring life and warmth to any space.
And that’s everything! What started as a room designed for my teenagers quickly became one of my favourite spaces in the house, one I find myself spending time in just as much as they do.
